Examining the Real-World Psychosocial Impact of
AID Systems

What’s the Story?

Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems are increasingly adopted worldwide to improve glycemic outcomes and ease the daily burden of living with diabetes.

While their glycemic benefits are well established, less is known about how people with diabetes (PWD) experience these systems in everyday life and how they influence overall management and burden.

This study aimed to assess the perceived psychosocial impact of AID systems in real-world use.

Study Findings

  • Overall, half of all AID users reported high satisfaction, with the highest levels among those who felt in control, required little effort, and experienced minimal interference from diabetes.
  • Yet only about one-third were highly satisfied with their diabetes management on AID, with significantly greater satisfaction among those reporting less burden. Perceptions of algorithm performance also varied: users who felt overwhelmed by management more often described their system’s algorithm as aggressive.
  • Across burden-relieving outcomes, those reporting little interference or effort more often agreed that AID improved sleep, reduced concerns about complications, and eased mental burden.
  • Therefore, while AID systems show clear potential to ease the burden of diabetes, satisfaction and psychosocial experiences vary considerably.
  • These findings underscore the need for continued refinement of algorithms, personalization features, and targeted education and support, to maximize user confidence and ensure consistent benefits across diverse populations.
